Bat Cookies for Halloween

bat cookies for halloween

bat cookieEveryone knows that food on a stick tastes best (think about it… corn dogs, those teriyaki skewers at the street fair, popsicles). These Bat Cookies for Halloween are no exception.

A delicious Sugar Cookie on a stick… shaped like a Bat… then DIPPED IN CHOCOLATE… and as we all know, food that is dipped in chocolate tastes best (strawberries, ice cream… and chocolate does make raisins taste ok)

Ok.. let’s consider this for a second….

Not only are these cookies on a stick, they are dipped in chocolate.

They must be the best cookies ever.

But wait! There’s MORE…Bat cookies look great as an edible centerpiece (the only problem with using them as a centerpiece? people will eat your decorations.)

What are you waiting for?

Bat Cookies for Halloween Recipe

Bat Cookies are made with a Basic Sugar Cookie Recipe. You can use this one, and for those of you who have a fabulous Sugar Cookie Recipe that your Aunt Edna left you, and you can’t imagine trying a different Sugar Cookie.. go ahead and use that (let me know how it went). The main thing is that you roll the dough a bit thicker…

Now… about the Bat shape. I have a bat cookie cutter… I love my bat cookie cutter…. it didn’t work for these cookies. The bat wings were wide, and it made them fragile (plus, they were too wide to dip). I ended up making my own bat template, and tracing it in dough. (Yes, I as a matter of fact, I was one of those overachievers in elementary school). The bat template I used is below the recipe… go ahead and freehand a bat picture,  trace it onto cardboard, and use it to cut your cookies. Of course, if you have a good one, use a bat cookie cutter. (And, naturally, you don’t HAVE to make Bats… whatever shape you like will work… pumpkins, platypuses and trains are also quite acceptable on a stick… decorate accordingly).

I used tubes of decorator gel to make the face… feel free to use colored icing… or use sprinkles…

Makes 18 Bats more or less

Total Time: 2 hours… maybe 2 1/2… you need cooling and setting time. Of course, you could speed things up by using a cookie cutter instead of hand cutting, and put the cookies in the fridge to set.

Ingredients

BASIC SUGAR COOKIE RECIPE

1 cup Butter

2/3 cup Granulated Sugar

1 Egg

1 tsp Vanilla extract

2 1/2 cups Unbleached Flour

CHOCOLATE COATING

1 pkg Chocolate Melts

DECORATION

white and red decorator frosting

Wooden Skewers

Instructions

You need a Bat Template, or a Bat Cookie Cutter…

MAKE THE SUGAR COOKIE DOUGH

In the bowl of a stand mixer, cream the butter and sugar for 4 or 5 minutes until light and fluffy.

Beat in the egg… at medium speed… scrape down the sides when it’s beat in.

Add the Vanilla extract

With mixer on slow speed, add the flour a bit at a time, until it’s completely incorporated.

Scrape the sides

Beat another 30 seconds.

Stick the dough in the refrigerator for half an hour… make sure it’s covered with plastic wrap, or stick in a Tupperware container.

Preheat the Oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit

Take the dough out of the fridge

I like to roll my dough between 2 sheets of waxed paper or plastic wrap, it keeps the counter clean, and makes the dough easy to manipulate.

Roll the dough to a thickness of around 1/3 inch.

Cut out the bats

If you are using the template, make sure your knife is sharp, and maybe has a narrow tip.

Lift the bats onto a cookie sheet. Go ahead and smooth the edges with your fingers.

Stick a wooden skewer into the bottom of the bat. Guide it in with your fingers so it doesn’t pop out.

Bake the cookies for 11 minutes

Let cool for one minute on the cookie sheet… then move the cookies to a cooling rack to cool completely

Pour the chocolate melts into a microwave safe container… melt them

I use a plug in chocolate heater thing (designed for cake pops) to keep the chocolate warm and melted… HOWEVER

the bats don’t really fit in it

AND

you just need to dip the fronts

SO

I store the chocolate in the heater thing… but spoon chocolate into a flat soup bowl.

Carefully dip the front of the bats

I stick the bat sticks into foam board to set… you don’t need to… if you don’t have foam, go ahead and rest them dry side down on waxed paper.

When the chocolate is set… give the bats a face… I used white for eyes, red for the mouth… and if you are really artistic, make teeth.

Let that set

DONE

Serve them up by sticking the stick part into a container filled with foam.

Be warned… if your sticks are too long, and the container is too small… it can tip over (then you get bat face on your tablecloth, and it’s a bugger to get out).
